For the first time in the year and a half or so that my family has known that I won't go to church, which then transitioned into my "coming out" as an atheist; me and my grampa had a civil conversation. And by this I mean no raised voices, sarcasm, hardened tones or trying to prove each other wrong. JUST SHARING IDEAS. I almost dropped dead. I had to walk in the other room where my sister was and ask, "Did you hear that? Did that just happen?"

He finally decided to ask me why I was turned away from believing in God, or any God(s).

I explained that through out history man has altered what they want their gods to represent or control over to fit their social and political needs. We have to consider that at one point in time every civilization had a custom made religion or belief structure that some how "fit" what the rulers or the peoples needed.

HE AGREED WITH THAT.

For example, 9 books written by the Apostles were REMOVED from the Bible because [yes, later there were a lot of scriptures] the Catholic church saw inconsistencies regarding Jesus' works and plan, etc. Then the Romans edited the Bible. And there are translation errors. Which all adds up. At this point, what is the "true word of God"? AND, how do we know that the Bible is not just another mechanism of man?

HE AGREED WITH THAT TOO.

Science is one of my greatest loves. I spend a lot of my time reading about the history of it and new developments whenever I get the chance. I believe evolution is a FACT. Not a theory. I don't believe that God has spent 6 billions years shaping the Earth and the species to what it is today. Christian lore was that the species are fixed, everything that is on this Earth exists how God made it or him to be. NOT TRUE. Man has evolved from other species, we are the end result. How do you explain the dinosaurs? Jesus got bored? He could foretell we would destroy and pollute our planet with fossil fuels?

HE HUMBLY SAID THAT I AM A SMART KID AND USUALLY KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT. But asked, "Where do you think that the air we breathe comes from?"

They are particles of gas in our atmosphere held 'in place' by gravity.

What is gravity, where do you think that comes from?

Any object, including ourselves, has a certain amount of attraction (or repulsion) depending on it's mass. The Earth has a very large mass, therefore it's attraction to other objects is very strong. Small gas particles are easily held into our atmosphere. The moon is held in orbit because of the Earth's gravity, for example.

He also asked where I thought that man came from. Long explanation short, man evolved over nearly a hundred thousand years. We had brother species, but over time we are the ones that won out. Scientists have found other humanoids/hominids (I can't remember the exact term used?) that existed. They've also carbon dated human remains that are older than what the Bible suggests as the creation of the universe!

HE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY FOR 5 MINUTES!!! Then said that we'll find out who's right sooner or later.

That was a week ago, I haven't been bothered about the subject since.

No, wait the debate wasn't dropped because he, yes he, pointed out how sexist BOM is. He noticed how women in the Bible played important roles, but in the BOM, you hear very little about them. Which he finds very odd.

YOU'VE BEEN IN THAT RELIGION, READ THE DAMNED BOOKS TIME AND TIME AGAIN FOR 40+ YEARS AND IT JUST TURNED ON A LIGHT IN YOUR HEAD?!?!?

Maybe I caused him some doubt.
