The USANA Ampitheatre in West Valley Utah (I think it's West Valley) is hosting OzzFest on August 16th. A few of the groups on the list are: Black Sabbath, Velvet Revolver, Iron Maiden, Rob Zombie.....and several other hard, hard, HARD rockers.

I'm very surprised.

What do you think the Utah folk think about this?

My brother's and nephew's are all dying to go, the really religious lady up the street thinks the Governer should get involved and shut it down.

I think that lady should stop trying to suppress rights and just be quiet about it. Sheesh.

Whatever happened to not going if it bothers you? Silly religious types. -_-;

I don't know, I guess it's just the idea that this "filth" is coming to Utah. I'm glad that they've signed up to host OzzFest - I'd be there if my husband was into that kind of music. But ohhhh - then I'd be ruined - darn it! (sarcasm)

Uhm, that would be interfering with a completely legal business transaction. The Governor could be sued out of his pants.

Could be sued, yes: but that would be incredibly unlikely. Utah could well have been the seeting for the film "Footloose."

Heh, other than not letting their kids go to it, Utahns are generally too apathetic to care or maybe even notice. They're too busy with church and families of six in their Mormon utopia to be aware of concerts... at least ones that all the ward members aren't going to.

Well, I remember when NIN played in Utah over a decade ago, there was a tale that Trent Reznor tore a BoM to shreds onstage at the Delta Center. He was not invited to play since.

To most Mormons, making money is one thing, god is another. But making money with God can only be called a religion.

I was at that concert. It wasn't Reznor who did the tearing, it was Maralyn Manson. Of course, the "powers that be in SLC" wouldn't bother with the distinction. Anyone involved in the promotion of that concert was giving the pouty treatment by officals of both the church people and the state people in power at the time. Neither NIN or Manson were welcome for a long time.

Ah, yes, I was incorrect. Strange, isn't it? One would think that the taboo factor would be all too tempting to any promoter. But I guess that there will be no event center that will have them.

Indeed. It was certainly a "let's not rock the boat" kind of place whenever I looked around. I'd be willing to surmize that not much has changed in the year or so since I've not been there (especially once I looked up some local news recently).

I'm no longer technically from Utah (moved to FL over a year ago now) but I would think that the basic situation would be the same way I had seen it happen as I grew up there. Most people won't much care. The few who might object in any serious way will make a stink on one of the local TV station "newz" programs, there will be a couple of half-assed bits of journalism in the Dez. News, and most people still won't really give a shit.

It's worth mentioning that, contrary to popular belief, the root of Utah culture, Salt Lake County, is not predominantly LDS is alignment or practice. Less than 50% of people living in what is referred to as "the Salt Lake Valley" would claim to be Mo/LDS. The officials in The Church Office Building!™ (big, orchestral drama music) hold considerable sway over the legislature and other politics, but things like concerts aren't often given too much attention without considerable reason.

Why doesn't the LDS church put up more of a stink these days? Probably because it's done nothing to improve either their image or their cashflow, and they may have noticed that opposing concerts seems a bit clichè these days (you know... since the 80s), and are trying to creep forward in the times.

That's my 25 cents worth.

Wow, Iron Maiden? I never had a chance to see them.....

As wacked as the church is, I don't think they will bother much with this concert. Anyone who would go to it allready likely sees the Morg as laughable. Bad PR is something the church tries desperately to avoid, although not very well sometimes. It seems like they attract it.
